Kenya calls for Skipton girls

From the archive, first published Thursday 4th Jan 2007.

KENYA beckons for two Skipton Girls' High School A-level students.

Rachael Thompson, 18, and Anna Burke, 17, both from Skipton, will be giving disadvantaged children the chance of education by helping to renovate a school near Nairobi.

They have been given the chance through AV Adventures and will spend five weeks working on the school and also teaching pupils.

Neither Rachael, who hopes to study medicine, nor Anna, who is aiming to be a vet, have ever been to Africa before and both are very excited about the trip.

Anna said she hoped to work there in the future, carrying out conservation work.

Rachael told the Herald: "We are expected to have a certain level of fitness because we will be working long days and the climate is hot."

They will work on the project six days a week and have a day off to take part in activities such as going on safari, swimming with dolphins and relaxing on the beach.

The two girls have to raise £2,200 each to take part in the excursion and are currently working hard to save money from part-time jobs.

They also have a number of fundraisers planned such as a race night.
