Both players and spectators were able to enjoy the hockey and intensity of this re-match between the two home sides.
The sixths invigorated by their excellent win the previous week, were determined to avenge their defeat earlier in the season.
They opened the scoring midway through the first-half as Hatton was given plenty of time to line up and crash home his first goal. The Badgers soon responded with a goal from Dowley following a short corner, the scores level at half-time.
In the second-half both sides continued their adventurous hockey Hatton scored his second to give the advantage back to the sixths. Then with Cameron Borrett, earning Man-of-the-Match for the Badgers, using his intricate skills to great effect, linking well with father Norman, they created the opportunity for brother Kieran to equalise.
With five minutes to go the Badgers thought they had the game in the bag when Roughton put them ahead with a carefully directed shot to beat the excellent Kelly. However a momentary lapse in the Badgers' defence with just a minute to go allowed Hatton to complete his hat-trick.
City of York St John 0
Rhydding Ladies Fourths 1
Last Saturday Ben Rhydding Ladies fourths travelled to York hoping for their first win of the new year, injuries and illness depleting their squad. However, Ben Rhydding took to the pitch full of enthusiasm and commitment, playing as a team, passing the ball around and creating chances.
The return of Laura Beardsmore, playing at centre forward, following the illness of Emma Girt, saw great attacking play. She deftly switched the ball to either wing, ensuring the Emma Connolly and Alice Ackroyd could drive the ball into the circle.
Following a strong attack down the right, Ben Rhydding were awarded a short corner, which Laura converted at the second attempt giving Ben Rhydding the lead at half-time.
After the break, York came out determined to try and score but Hannah Charters and Sundy Ellis ensured that this didn't happen. Claire Tyson at central defence and Claire Smithies in goal were as solid as ever, ensuring that York could not score.
A number of breaks by the home team were dealt with by Ben Rhydding who had no wish to relinquish their one goal lead and it was a great relief to all the team when the final whistle went.
This was a hard-fought victory for Ben Rhydding who played some of their best hockey for many weeks and who now have a week's break before meeting Harrogate.
