Tribute paid to timber yard victim

From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Friday 18th Feb 2005.

Police have identified the 52-year-old man crushed to death at a Bradford timber yard.

John Crossley, of Pars-onage Road, Laisterdyke, had been working on a stacking machine when the accident happened on Tuesday at Ramsey Timber in Wellington Street, off Sticker Lane.

He was found trapped by a colleague who tried to revive him. Police and paramedics were called.

An ambulance crew tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead.

No one from Ramsey Timber has been available for comment.

A Health and Safety Executive investigation has been launched. A spokesman said computer experts had been called in to examine the machine Mr Crossley was using.

One of his workmates, who did not want to be named, said the tragedy had left workers shocked.

"He'd been working with us for about four years and was just one of the lads," he said. "He was as sound as a pound. He was a big Bradford City fan, he loved football and days out at the races. He'll be missed."

Neighbours who lived in flats at Moseley House also paid tribute to him as a pleasant, quiet man.

Dawn Wrathmell, 35, who lived in the flat above Mr Crossley, said he always made time to say hello.

"He was a genuinely nice man," she said. "He never seemed to let anything bother him."

Another woman, who did not want to be named, said Mr Crossley had been a perfect neighbour.

"He wasn't a loner although he lived alone," she said.

"I think he had family at the seaside, possibly Blackpool. He wouldn't have a TV in the house but loved to listen to the radio."
