The Big Bang/Soulfish -- Victoria Hall

Kicking off a great night of live music on Saturday, The Big Bang stormed into their set, giving us some pounding versions of 1960s hits from The Kinks, Rolling Stones and The Small Faces among others.

Although most worked well, I prefer some of the songs at their original slower pace.

The audience didn't seem to mind though as they were up off their seats to Brown Eyed Girl and stayed up until the encore of the Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There.

After a short break, on came top of the bill Soulfish for the first of two, hour-long sets of soul and dance music.

The big stage is ideal for this band to showcase their vocals and musicianship on songs from Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Sam and Dave.

The show doesn't change much over the years and why should it? The crowd enjoyed every minute of it and filled the dance floor with bodies all night.

Highlights came from Seamus Daly on Van Morrison's Moondance and great funky guitar work and strident horn section on Stevie Wonder's Superstition.

Another brilliant night organised by John Dunn for Diabetes UK.

I am looking forward to next year already.
