Ben Rhydding Fourths 4
Huddersfield 2
Last Saturday, newly promoted Ben Rhydding Ladies Fourths entertained Huddersfield in only their second league match of the season.
Following last week's defeat at Sheffield the team were determined from the outset to make amends and were soon on the attack, pinning the visitor's defence in their own half for long periods.
This pressure soon resulted in Ben Rhydding scoring their first goal when captain, Alice Ackroyd slid the ball past the `keeper.
Ben Rhydding continued to press and forced several corners but were unable to convert any of them. However, a superb clearance out of defence, gave Hannah Drakard a free run down the left wing.
Her shot was parried by Huddersfield's defence but only as far at Sundy Ellis who arrived on the circle edge to provide a stunning shot which was deflected into the net.
Huddersfield quickly counter attacked and following the award of a short corner, scored a very well taken goal in the back corner of the goal, giving Ben Rhydding's goalkeeper, Claire Smithies, no chance of saving it.
After half-time, Ben Rhydding were constantly on the attack and their defence was rarely troubled. The home team went 3-1 up in the first few minutes and soon took their chance to make it 4-1.
In the last few minutes, Ben Rhydding tired and Huddersfield scored again on the break making the final score 4 - 2. This was a very enjoyable game played in good spirits, ending with Ben Rhydding taking the 3 points.
l On Saturday Ben Rhydding Fourths travel to Bradford for a tough match against a very strong team.
Badgers 2
Sheffield Hallam 1
The Badgers were fielding a side without a recognised centre forward, but Bruce Carter led the line with gusto and was unfortunate not to have been awarded a penalty flick when the Sheffield `keeper upended him.
The Ben Rhydding team with five players Under-14 matched the more experienced Sheffield side in all departments.
Sheffield looked most likely to score from the many short corners that the defence conceded but Kelly made several excellent saves.
The task looked much harder after Sheffield opened the scoring with a goal from open play.
Cerdit must go the whole Badgers team as they continued to work extremely hard and play their enterprising hockey.
They were rewarded when man of the match, James Jordan, followed up to put the ball in the net after the Sheffield `keeper had blocked a shot from Carter.
Jordan was also involved in the build up to John Dowley's goal, who had only on the field few minutes.
The Badgers have now won the two opening league games against the two promoted sides but will face some stern challenges in the weeks ahead.
The men's second team lost 2-1 to Harrogate Seconds.
Their scorer was M Bell.
The men's thirds team beat Halifax Seconds 2-1 with two goals from M French.
The men's fourth team had a 4-4 draw with Gainsboro Rose Seconds and their scorers were T Hatton, J McMillan, J Till and S Timperley.
The men's fifth team lost 1-0 to Hull University Seconds and the sixth team also lost 1-0 to Halifax Thirds.
