Motorists targeted in appeal

From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Saturday 20th Sep 2003.

Motorists in Queensbury and Shelf are being targeted in a new campaign.

Calderdale Council is urging drivers to belt up after 500 drivers in the area were injured in crashes last year.

The Council's road safety officer Peter Shepherdson said: "I am horrified at the number of people who fail to wear seatbelts for local journeys because it is on local journeys that most people suffer injuries."

He urged drivers to wear seatbelts to prevent people from being thrown forward in an accident.

He said: "In an impact children can be projected head first because of their weight distribution, even at speeds of less than 20 mph."

He said seatbelt fines were modest compared to the risk of injury.

"The law on seatbelts is simple. If one is fitted it must be worn," he said.
