Eccleshill see their Vase run derailed

From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Tuesday 9th Jan 2001.

Eccleshill United's hopes of emulating last season's feat of reaching the National stages of the FA Carlsberg Vase were shattered last night by a 3-1 defeat at Borrowash Victoria.

A double from lively striker Gary Briscoe ended the Bradford side's dreams of glory in a tie which finally went ahead after bad weather had resulted in it being postponed six times.

United were slight favourites going into tie because their Derbyshire rivals are from the Northern Counties East Division One.

But Borrowash are no respecters of reputations. Eccleshill are the second Premier Division side they have humbled this season.

United went the same way as Sheffield who fell victims to Victoria in the previous round. Ray Price's men battled hard but had to admit defeat to their hard-working opponents.

Victoria showed that they meant business from the start and the only goal of the first half came from the boot of Briscoe on the half hour.

United midfielder Mark Senior pulled his side level in the 60th minute but parity was short lived.

Briscoe netted his second 15 minutes later and Andy Beckford wrapped the tie up ten minutes from time to send Borrowash on their way to a fourth round meeting with Bristol side Hallen.

Three of the other top non-league sides are in cup action tonight - all in different competitions.

UniBond Division One side Farsley Celtic host Northern Counties East Division One outfit Hatfield Main in the West Riding County Cup second round.

Assistant player-manager Steve Learoyd is doubtful after pulling a hamstring in Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Lincoln United but youngsters James Nester and Andy Moores are promoted to the squad.

Forward Nester made a brief appearance as a substitute in the Lincoln game and may get another opportunity to impress.

Liversedge also have home advantage against lower division visitors. Winterton Rangers journey to Premier Division Sedge for a President's Cup first round tie.

Home manager Wayne Bruce has injury worries as well as having five ineligible players for a tie which was originally due in November before he completed his recent signings.

In all there are seven changes to Saturday's squad with young keeper Chris Simpson, Nick Johnson, Anthony Jackson, Simon O'Hara, Kevin Blanchard, Andy Payne and Adam Goldthorpe all coming into contention.

Guiseley face a trip to Division One rivals North Ferriby United for a UniBond League Cup Group 8 clash.

Neil Parsley's men need a victory to have any hope of qualifying for the quarter finals but the home side also need a win to stay in the hunt. Guiseley have to pick themselves up after Saturday's dismal 2-0 home defeat by Eastwood.
