THE WESTGATE slum clearance scheme of the mid-1930s
demolished a whole geography of streets of older Keighley in an area we now
generally know as Damside.
This photo shows Seedy Hill leading from Oakworth Road to the North Beck, which used to flow openly through the heart of the old town.
Property which had been adequate, even desirable, a century earlier had become overcrowded and dilapidated, although the three-storey premises towards the left here seem to belie contemporary Health Services descriptions of `doors with panels broken' and `windows where paper and rags have replaced some of the panes.'
However, at least three chimneys in this view have a list to the right.
Other Keighley clearance schemes of the period involved Eastwood in 1933 and the King Street Club-houses in 1937.
