'Seek grants before spending £20,000'

From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Saturday 26th Feb 2000.

Plans to spend £20,000 of council tax payers' money on new play equipment for Glusburn Park have come under fire.

Glusburn Parish Council is proposing to install the children's play equipment before the summer. The money is coming out of reserves which have built up over a number of years from the parish precept - the amount of money the organisation gets from the annual council tax.

But some villagers believe the Parish Council should attempt to apply for grants before spending such a large amount.

New equipment for the park was highlighted as a priority in a survey of residents in Glusburn and Cross Hills. Details of the equipment has been pinned on village notice boards to show people what the money is to be spent on.

At a Parish Council meeting, chairman Isobel Westhead said she believed the Council would be knocked back for grants because it had such a large amount of money in its bank account. "Over the years this Parish Council has built up substantial funds," she said. "I think the people of the parish should enjoy that money and the young people have as much right to that as anyone else."

However, Philip Barrett, of Station Road, Cross Hills, believes the Parish Council has not looked hard enough for grant aid. He claimed the Council was "taking the easy option". And Glusburn resident Edward Gee suggested the Council set up a separate group to look at applying for grants.
