Paynter to try for county career

From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Saturday 14th Oct 2000.

Windhill's talented all-rounder David Paynter has embarked on a new attempt to become a county cricketer by signing a one-year contract with North-amptonshire.

The 19-year-old batsman and off spin bowler will link up with his new county after spending a second winter playing in New Zeal-and.

Paynter, great grandson of former England and Lancashire batsman Eddie Paynter, was a trainee with Yorkshire, but wasn't retained and played second team cricket with Worcestershire for most of last season.

It was while playing for Worcester that he was spotted by the Leicester coach and second team captain Nick Cook.

His father Mark said: "David did well with Worcester and averaged in the high 40s. Their coach Damien D'Oliveira was interested, but they couldn't sign him because of uncertainties over the contracts of some of their first team players."

Paynter has played most of his cricket in the Bradford League with Windhill. His father used to be captain.

David will play league cricket in Northamptonshire when he returns from Auckland in the spring.

Mark is also looking forward to a new cricket challenge. After helping Clayton to win the Bradford Central League First Division title he is moving back into the Bradford League to be captain of Esholt.

"I was going to finish at Windhill," he said, "but my enthusiasm has been re-kindled at Clayton and I am looking forward to Esholt.

"They have some good young lads there and they wanted some leadership. I am going to help them to recruit an overseas player and we have signed two players from Windhill, bowler Darren Drake and middle order batsman Kevin Dewhirst.
